Girls Get into Engineering (10/07/2009)

The College of West Anglia, Isle campus hosted a get into Engineering taster for ‘girls only’ on Friday 3rd July. The morning saw a group of over 23 year 8 girls from Thomas Clarkson Community College enjoying practical sessions in the vehicle body shop. Some of the hands on activities include vehicle paint spraying, plumbing and 3D CAD presentations.

The taster was organised to help overcome the initial resistance and concerns female students face participating in a course that is often seen in their eyes as something for ‘boys only’. We feel this project will help to address the gender divide in the engineering industry.

“As a college we want to do everything we can to encourage young female students to explore possible career routes that would not normally be their first choice. The industry needs first rate engineers and they could be either male or female” said Tony Williams, programme manager for engineering.
