Girls in Construction

The College’s first all-girls construction class have recently been in the news and featured in the Eastern Daily Press.

The girls are about to complete a BTEC First Diploma in Construction at the King’s Lynn Campus. They are taking this course as part of a partnership project between the College and local secondary schools. At year 9, school students (aged 14) can apply for a two year vocational (work related) course at the College. Subjects offered include construction, hairdressing, food preparation, animal care and sport. These courses lead to a nationally recognised qualification and require attendance at the College for one day a week. If all course areas are successfully completed, the BTEC is equivalent to 5 GCSE’s at A – C grade.

The girls have been studying and practising brickwork, carpentry and plumbing alongside health and safety and the use of science and mathematics in construction. They have all really enjoyed the course and at least two of them plan to continue with construction-based studies next year.
