Lynn's 1st V Award Volunteer (27/02/2009)

Genevieve Sayer has just become the first young person in King’s Lynn to be presented with a National Award for her work in the voluntary sector. Now she wants to encourage others to experience the benefits that volunteering can provide. Genevieve, 19, was presented with her award by Mike Stevens and Thordis Fridriksson of Future Radio at a V Awards event held at Dragon Hall in Norwich last month.
Louise Howes from Norfolk Vinvolved team said: “V is an independent charity campaigning for youth volunteering in England. The Vinvolved team are here to inspire young people to volunteer and gain recognition for their positive contribution. The V50 Award is presented to 16-25 year olds who have completed 50 hours of volunteering in a 12 month period.”
Genevieve moved to Norfolk two years ago and thought that volunteering would help her to make new friends and become part of the community. “I was unemployed at the time and found that I was in a rut. I needed to gain confidence and get some work experience,” said Genevieve. Since becoming a volunteer, Genevieve has spent time working in a Scope charity shop as a Retail Assistant, carried out general office duties for the Norfolk Foster Care Association and has also been a Volunteer Assistant for the Caring for Carers Group: “This group meets every other Thursday and is for carers aged between 8 and 12 years. It gives them a place to meet and have some time out. My role was to help with activities, which I really enjoyed as I’m very creative,” said Genevieve.
Genevieve now has a part time job and is at College doing an access to Art and Design course. She is also applying to universities to continue with her studies: “The application process asks for a personal statement and I will definitely include my volunteering experiences. I have become a better team player, I have more self confidence and very good communication skills. Volunteering has given me a sense of personal responsibility and I feel that I have made a positive contribution to my local community.”
Genevieve’s message to other young people is simple: “Volunteering gives you a real buzz - everyone should try it!”
