Learning and Personal Support
Guidance and Support
All students on programmes of more than 120 hours per year are allocated a course/personal tutor. The prime purpose of the tutorial process is to supply academic, personal and vocational support throughout your course.
- A course/personal tutor has the responsibility of monitoring your progress, dealing with any difficulties you may have and guiding you to develop the skills to do this yourself.
- A subject tutor, while equally concerned that you are successful, is responsible for ensuring academic progress is maintained and supplying prompt feedback.
- A course director is responsible for the overall management of the course.
Student Advisors
Our team of student advisors are available to provide you with confidential and impartial support throughout any difficult periods you might have during your time at college. They are able to offer prospective and existing students unbiased help on a range of matters related to their studies and personal lives. This may involve referral to external services such as counselling, housing, health services etc. Student advisors also hold regular class representatives meetings across all campuses to make sure that the "Student Voice" is heard. They also arrange opportunities for organisations to promote their services to students and organise annual trips.
- King's Lynn campus: 01553 815349 or 01553 815397
- Isle/Wisbech campus: 01945 468330
- Cambridge (Milton) campus: 01223 860701
Counselling
The college has its own counselling team who offer a free confidential service to all students. This is available at all campuses. Students can make appointments directly (01553 815314) or via a student advisor.
Additional Support
The College caters for a wide range of disabilities and learning difficulties (including dyslexia) and we welcome applications from students with disabilities or other additional needs. We ask you to tell us on your application form if you have a disability or a learning difficulty for which you may need extra support. You also have a chance to tell us about this at your interview. We will then assess what kind of support you need to attend the course.
During the first weeks of the course, we also assess all students to see if they need any extra support for dyslexia.
We have lots of facilities to support particular needs, such as specialist IT equipment e.g. large monitors, one-hand keyboards, specialised tracker-balls, large print for partially sighted learners, laptop hire and ergonomic keyboards. We also have support for hearing impaired learners e.g. personal and room loops, BSL communicators etc. as well as general learning support.
There are also special facilities to improve access for people with disabilities such as parking, lifts, ramps, access and disabled toilets. An individual support plan may also include special arrangements for examinations; for example: additional time, large print papers, a reader or a separate room. We may be able to purchase equipment to support needs as they are identified. If you feel you need support, it is important to discuss your additional needs as early as possible to ensure that we plan effectively and ensure a happy and successful college experience. The college has a strong tradition of support for students with a range of individual needs. However, the College also has a legal duty to ensure that it does not provide less favourable treatment to students with disabilities. We are required to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that students with disabilities are not disadvantaged.
If you have hearing impairments and would like to text our Additional Support Co-ordinator, please text 07825 540278, you can also phone on (01553) 815483 for other enquiries.
