Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I have 5 GCSEs at grade A-C including maths, English language and double science at BB and have undertaken 6 months voluntary work experience in health care. However I achieved a 2:2 in my degree. Will I still be considered?
A: No. Even with the correct GCSEs, we will not consider 2:2 degrees.
Q: What do I do if I have overseas /non-UK or Irish qualifications?
A: We will require a NARIC statement of comparability to ensure that non-UK or Irish high school qualifications meets UK GCSE grade A-C standard. This can be obtained (along with further information) via the NARIC website – www.naric.org.uk. We will also need to see copies of certificates to ensure that the grades obtained match the results of the NARIC statement.
Q: What do I do if I have Scottish Standard/Irish Junior qualifications?
A: These will be assessed as UK qualifications to ascertain if they meet the entry requirements.
Q: Does my degree qualification compensate for not having the required GCSEs?
A: No. Any qualification above GCSE standard does not negate the need to hold the required GCSEs.
Q: Do you accept adult literacy/numeracy qualifications in lieu of GCSE maths and English?
A: No. We will only accept GCSE maths and English. Medical schools do not accept alternative qualifications to GCSEs.
Q: Which medical schools accept the Access to Medicine and Dentistry qualification?
A: Click here for the full list.
Q: What percentage of Access to Medicine and Dentistry students receive offers to progress to medical school?
A: From the 2010/11 course, 67% of students received offers.
Q: How long can I expect to wait for a response/outcome once the college has received my application and will I hear if I am unsuccessful?
A: Typically, this can take up to 4 weeks due to the volume of applications that are received. We write to all applicants informing them if they are unsuccessful and reasons why.
Q: Can I hold down a part time job whilst studying the Access course?
A: This is down to the individual. However the course is extremely intrusive outside of class hours, given the fast pace of the study schedule that students are expected to keep up with. Long distance commuting is also not advised.
Q: How long does the course last?
A: This is a one year programme – starting in September and finishing the following June/July.
Q: Does the college have halls of residence?
A: No. Accommodation is offered via private landlords and is arranged solely by the prospective student. Click here for more information.
