Apprenticeships
How does an Apprenticeship work?
You contact the Work Based Learning Department on 01553 815280, to discuss your training needs – either for an existing employee or with a view to recruiting a new member of staff.
The appropriate Training Adviser will supply you with all relevant information and, if you are recruiting, details of apprenticeship applicants that are on our ‘Awaiting Placement’ register. These applicants will have been initially assessed.
Once you confirm that you would like to proceed, and have identified an eligible young person, the Training Adviser will carry out a pre-placement health and safety check of your workplace with you and agree a start date.
Before college attendance starts the learner will be asked to attend a college induction (normally 1 day, but occasionally 2).
In liaison with yourself, the learner and the course director, the Training Adviser will draw up an Individual Learning Plan with details of on-the-job and off-the-job training and the qualifications to be achieved.
College attendance will vary in duration and frequency according to the vocational area.
Off-the-job training may involve visits from a college NVQ Assessor on a regular basis – scheduled in advance and at your convenience. Alternatively you may have, or may wish to nominate, Work Based Recorders and/or Assessors within your organisation. (However, if you are involved in electrotechnical or construction trades, you are required to nominate a Work Based Recorder.)
The Training Adviser will review progress with yourself and the Apprentice at 3 monthly intervals – or more frequently if circumstances require it.
