School Leavers - Aged 14-17 and thinking about what to do after your GCSEs

Transport

The college works in conjunction with local county councils to operate various bus routes to and from each campus to cater for full-time students.

County councils have differing policies for subsidised transport. Eligibility will depend on which county council you need to apply to, which campus you will be studying at and which course you have chosen.

Which campus do you need information about?

If you are aged 16-18 on 1st September 2012 and live more than 3 miles from the King’s Lynn campus you can apply to your local county council for transport.

The county councils operate various bus routes covering towns such as Downham Market, Swaffham, Fakenham, Hunstanton, Wisbech, March, Sutton Bridge and Dereham. However, the availability of subsidised transport will depend on your local county’s transport policy and the course which you choose.

If a course is available at both King’s Lynn and Isle campus you must select the campus nearest to your home address (or, for Norfolk students, one which has a core transport route to that campus) as county councils will only provide transport to your nearest appropriate campus. If you do decide to study at an alternative campus, you will not be eligible for subsidised transport.

If you live in Norfolk and can get to one of the core bus routes (as defined by Norfolk County Council) to the King’s Lynn or Isle campuses, you can apply to Norfolk County Council for a subsidised bus pass.

If you live in Cambridgeshire or Lincolnshire we advise you check with your relevant county council at the earliest possible opportunity to find out if you are eligible for a subsidised bus pass.

Each county council charges an annual fee (sometimes payable by term) for the subsidised bus pass. Some offer further reductions to students from families on low incomes or in receipt of certain benefits. Details will be published on the individual county council websites usually after Easter.

Many students will be able to get financial help towards some or even the full cost of their county transport pass via the college’s Learner Support Fund. Eligibility for this is based primarily on household income. Click here for more info

We run a free shuttle bus service from the King’s Lynn campus to the Health, Social and Childhood Studies campus.

If you are aged 16 to 18 on 1 September 2012 and live more than three miles from the Isle campus you can apply to your local county council for transport.

The county councils operate various bus routes covering towns such as March, Chatteris, Whittlesey, Parson Drove, Sutton Bridge, Upwell and Outwell. However, the availability of subsidised transport will depend on your local county’s transport policy and the course which you choose.

If you live in Cambridgeshire or Lincolnshire we advise you check if you are eligible for a subsidised bus pass with your relevant county council.

Norfolk County Council only offers subsidised transport to the Isle Campus for students who can access one of the 3 core bus routes (as defined by the county council). These core routes operate from Upwell / Outwell / Emneth and from some of the villages either side of the A47 between King’s Lynn and Wisbech. If you live within 3 miles of the King’s Lynn campus, you will not be eligible for Norfolk County Council subsidised travel.

If you live in Norfolk and wish to study a specialist course at the Isle campus (fashion, furniture or motor sport) which is not available at the King’s Lynn campus, you will need to make your own travel arrangements but the college will usually be able to subsidise the costs via the Learner Support Fund.

Students living in Peterborough studying for a specialist course (fashion, furniture, motor sport or foundation art) at the Isle campus can also apply for a £300 subsidy towards the cost of travel to Isle.

We would advise all students to contact their county councils as soon as possible to check their eligibility for subsidised transport.

If you are aged 16 to 18 on 1 September 2012 and live in Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Hertfordshire or Lincolnshire you may be able to apply for a subsidised bus pass from your local county council to get to college. We advise you check with the relevant county council at the earliest possible opportunity to find out if you are eligible.

Norfolk County Council does not, unfortunately, offer subsidised transport to the Cambridge campus so you will not be able to apply for a bus pass.

If you live in Norfolk, the college is able to offer a bursary of up to £400 towards the cost of getting to college (terms and conditions apply). There is an excellent regular train service from King’s Lynn to Waterbeach station, with stops at Watlington, Downham Market, Littleport and Ely.

The college operates a free bus service from Waterbeach station to and from the campus at the start and end of the normal college day. Train fares vary, depending on station of origin and ticket type. Details are available from National Rail Enquiries (www.nationalrail.co.uk or 08457484950) or from your local station.
