The College of West Anglia

Starting College – Kit Lists 2016/17

For some of our courses, it is necessary to purchase relevant equipment or clothing (e.g. protective clothing), whilst for some others, we offer optional college-branded clothing. The kit lists below will give you information about what equipment is essential for your course and may also offer optional equipment.

The majority of our equipment and uniform can be purchased at our online store, but please check the kit list for your course below first, as some equipment and uniform will only be available from the original supplier.

Important information for 19+ students

If you are a fully-funded student (i.e. you do not have to pay any fees for your course) or are planning on obtaining an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your course fees then any equipment or uniform which is considered essential to you completing your course will be provided you by the faculty team. If this is the case for you, please do not purchase any kit, equipment or uniform prior to your course.

You can find more information on adult learning fees here.

If you do not meet the above criteria, you may be entitled to financial help to help you with kit, equipment and uniform costs.

Financial help

The college operates a Learner Support Fund which can help students whose financial circumstances make it difficult for them to meet the costs associated with study; find out more information here.

Once you have purchased your equipment and have been awarded funds from the Learner Support Fund, please provide us with a receipt of your purchase and we will refund you in the first term of the course.

If the cost of your kit, uniform and equipment is above £100 and you have already been awarded money from the Learner Support Fund, we may be able to order it for you. Once you’ve received your award letter, please contact us on 01553 815271 and we will be able to advise you further.

Please note that we are only able to refund or purchase kit, equipment or uniform which is considered essential to you completing your qualification.

Care & Early Years

– All kits available via the online store

Students are advised not to purchase kit for any care & early years course over the summer. Placements don’t start until after the October half-term and we would suggest waiting a few weeks into the term, to make sure you are certain that you are on the right course. Each course has a different colour kit, and is also named according to the subject area.
However, if you think you may be entitled to financial support towards the cost of the kit (and your DBS check, travel costs etc.), then you should apply for that over the summer as funding is allocated on a first come first served basis.

Students looking to complete either a Level 2 or Level 3 (not Level 1) in care & early years will be required to complete a DBS check to enable them to access placement. We are currently organising a new online system that will be explained to students during their induction to ensure they can upload information correctly. For those students eligible for financial support they should be applying for £50 to cover the cost. All other students will be charged the same amount at the end of the on-line process.
