Case Study - Anthony Palmer
Engineering apprentice Anthony Palmer’s battle to overcome serious illness whilst completing his apprenticeship training as a metalworker has been recognised with the award of National Adult Apprentice of the Year 2011.
Anthony (22), from March, completed his training ahead of target, gaining distinctions in all his BTEC qualifications, and his dedication and commitment has now been acknowledged nationally with this award.
Anthony started his training with Stainless Metalcraft and the work-based learning department at the Isle campus in September 2007. In the second year of his apprenticeship, he was diagnosed with cancer and underwent surgery. After some time off, he returned to work and training with renewed enthusiasm and focus. His motivation and achievement had a positive impact on fellow apprentices. He completed the level 2 apprenticeship in engineering and then went on to achieve the full advanced apprenticeship award.
“Despite a difficult couple of years, Anthony managed to finish his apprenticeship a year early. He has had the best feedback and reports and he brought a new lease of life to the department,” said Carly Brown, Stainless Metalcraft HR representative. “He has a real thirst for learning, and now he’s finished his apprenticeship he wants to learn more, and we want to support him to do that.”
