Accessibility statement for College of West Anglia

This accessibility statement applies to the website of the College of West Anglia and the subdomain of the University Centre West Anglia.

This website is run by the College of West Anglia. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • the text will not reflow in a single column when you change the size of the browser window
  • you cannot modify the line height or spacing of text
  • most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
  • live video streams do not have captions
  • some of our online forms are difficult to navigate using just a keyboard
  • you cannot skip to the main content when using a screen reader
  • there’s a limit to how far you can magnify the map on our ‘contact us’ page
  • The shade of orange on the Higher Education page does not have sufficient colour contrast in some contexts.
  • Throughout the website videos have been embedded without Title attributes.
  • The Tawk Live chat bubble can be tabbed to but has no clear focus state to indicate it is selected. As Tawk is used site-wide, all pages will report this issue. As this is a 3rd party system we cannot correct this, but we have raised the issue of accessibility with Tawk.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

College of West Anglia is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below:

NON-ACCESSIBLE CONTENT

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Below are known issues that we are aware need fixing, cannot fix or do not need to fix at the moment. If you find something that needs fixing, please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Live Chat tool:
  • WCAG 2.4.7 Focus Visible: No or barely visible focus (Manual)
  • WCAG 1.4.10 Reflow: 400% & mobile view (Manual)

Disproportionate Burden

We have conducted a benefit assessment in relation to our Live Chat tool, provided by tawk.to, a third party provider. We have concluded that to fix the areas of non-compliance detailed above, would pose a disproportionate burden to the college. Our Live Chat function is not the only method of contacting us for support or information. We can be contacted via telephone, email, our online forms, social media or in-person. We are confident the number of users negatively impacted by this issue is minimal.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services. For example, we have PDFs with information on how users can access our services, and forms published as Word documents.

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.

Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

Live video

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 6th April 2023. It was last reviewed on 18th April 2023.

This website was last tested on 17th April 2023. The test was carried out by Qlue.uk.

You can read the full accessibility test report here.

Each page template was checked, in a variety of browsers including Chrome, Safari and Firefox, against success criterion for both WCAG 2.1 A and WCAG 2.1 AA standards using the above tools and a checklist was written detailing how each section of the website conformed to the standards.

Where one page template was used to output multiple pages (e.g. course pages), a wide selection of pages were also checked to ensure compliance with the standards.
